My
name is Jo-Ellen (Joey) Morman, and I am the founder of and the
driving force behind The Fitness Connection. In addition to a BS
in Business Administration, I am ACE (American Council on Exercise)
educated and W.I.T.S. (World Instructor Training School) certified.
I am also a Certified Heart Zones
Personal Trainer. It is unfortunate that there are so many certifying
associations where one can become certified just by passing an
on-line exam or taking a "crash" course that offers
one day of lecturing and no hands-on experience. There is no governing
body. This means that anyone can become a certified fitness trainer
even if they have no fitness background. I truly believe that
certification is extremely important and W.I.T.S. provides a compact
training course of thirty hours of core knowledge and hands-on
training.
Credentials
Even more important to me than certification,
is my years of fitness experience. I have been actively involved
in fitness since 1984. I regularly invest time into continuing education
courses and seminars as well as self-study courses in all areas
of health and fitness and I diligently integrate principles of exercise
and nutrition into my own lifestyle. The idea for developing a fitness
training business came to me after spending most of my adult life
making fitness and sports a priority life choice, second only to
my family and my fondness for eating!
Originally, I began working out to
stay in control of my weight. It had nothing to do with feeling
better, getting strong, being healthy. All those things just happened
as a result of staying fit. For years, I shared my fitness knowledge
with anyone who would listen, teaching, sometimes preaching (!)
to relatives, friends, and friends of friends. I taught them how
to use weights to tone and what aerobic exercise (cardio) to perform
to help lose weight.
But something changed as I headed to
my forties. I noticed that it was becoming more difficult to keep
the weight off. I was not feeling good about myself. The same routines
were no longer working, and I knew I had to do something different.
So I made the decision to train for six months for the Marine Corp.
Marathon in Washington D.C. and completed it. It is one of my proudest
life accomplishments.
After the marathon,
I lost interest in long distance running and decided to challenge
myself to training for a triathlon. I engaged the commitment of
my husband and a good friend and together we learned how to train.
Over a period of 2 years I completed 5 triathlons ranging from a
sprint triathlon to an Olympic length triathlon (1 mile swim, 26
mile bike, 6 mile run). I used that combination training (swimming,
biking, running) to keep the weight off. During that period of my
life, I picked up friends along the way who wanted to try racing
and I helped train them. It was a great learning experience for
me. I substantially increased my knowledge about health, fitness
and training people. It is also when I discovered the benefits of
Heart ZoneTraining.
Then came my babies – three between
the ages of 42 and 44! That was the turning point for me. Gone were
my 8-10 hours per week of training time. "Baby" weight
was added to my figure and was refusing to budge. After spending
several years studying and reading everything I could find on health,
losing weight and fitness and experimenting with different weight
training routines and cardio combinations, it became increasingly
clear that what worked in my twenties isn't what works in
my forties. I needed to change everything. It isn't just weight
training or just cardio that keeps the weight off; in fact, it isn't
even a combination of the two. Nor is it straight dieting.
To truly succeed in your weight
loss efforts, you have to change the way you eat and combine it
with the right weight training routine and cardio exercise for your
body type and metabolism. Once you have that combination working
for you, you get an additional bonus. YOU FEEL GREAT ABOUT YOURSELF!
And that's the connection. Feeling great about yourself begins
with The Fitness Connection.
